Title:Reframing the student loan costing debate: The benefits of competition
Short Description:Examines the behavior of the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) in the absence of and in the presence of the Direct Loan Program (DLP) to identify the impact of competition.
Annotation:This paper examines the historical behavior of the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) in the absence of and in the presence of the Direct Loan Program (DLP) to identify the impact of competition on the FFELP. Two annual time- series models are used to investigate the real costs of the student loan programs, indicating that the introduction of the DLP has produced significant cost savings.
