Title:Breaking through the barriers to college: Empowering low-income communities, schools, and families for college opportunity and student financial aid
Organization:Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis
Short Description:This report from the USC Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis (CHEPA) identifies six challenges facing low-income students and their families when applying for college and financial aid and strategies for overcoming them.
Annotation:This report from the USC Center for Higher Education Policy Analysis (CHEPA) identifies six challenges facing low-income students and their families when applying for college and financial aid and strategies for overcoming them. The challenges include: (1) Students make college decisions in part based on their perceptions of aid availability; (2) A high school's culture of preparation makes a difference in student's access to information about college and financial aid; (3) Students need accurate and timely information; (4) Group seminars on financial aid can be helpful, but cannot supplant one-on-one support; (5) Even after applying, students need sustained support; and (6) Parents also require information on college and aid.
